What do we want our books to be?

In my last episode of the New Media Minute, I posed the question of what we want our books to be. The person with the most thought-provoking answer will win my copy of J.C. Hutchins’ multimedia book “Personal Effects.”

Here at the three top answers. Please add a comment as to whether 1, 2, or 3 should win the copy!

  • 1. “I still buy books. I probably don’t read as much as I should, but there’s something about holding them. The excitement of thinking you’ll read it, and learn or escape. And from a practical standpoint, it’s easier to hold and portable. If you lose it, you get a new one. You can give it to a friend. I’m still at a loss for why my mom wants that stupid eReader thing. Batteries, more time in front a screen, another device…. too much trouble.”
  • 2. “We currently have several methods of distributing books — hardcover versus paperback; print versus audio; new versus used. These different distributions represent a strength of the trade book industry because they allow companies to segment the market and most profitably capture each segment’s willingness to pay. These new versions of books (ebooks) provide additional methods of market segmentation and represent a profit opportunity for many market stakeholders.”
  • 3. “Reading is about reading, watching a movie is about watching a movie and listening to music is about (can you guess?) listening to music. All the rest is just marketing. I have no problem with marketing. Marketing is good. The problem is that no one is reviewing this book and commenting on whether it works as literature. Instead everyone is talking about the phone number you can call. When the ID cards have been lost, when the phone recording has been disconnected and when the internet sites have been shut down, the only question is: ‘Was it a good book?’”
